Derby and Broome

Days 57 – 66

Derby

We didn’t do much in Derby. We took Matt to the hospital because of his rash. Luckily it was fine. A car got stolen from the caravan park we were staying at – it was still chained to a caravan. The caravan got pulled into a tree before the chain broke. We woke up to hear the crash and the car zoom away. In the morning a motor-home reversed into our car. Luckily we only got a small dent. We didn’t need to get our lights fixed this time.

We drove around this jetty.

Broome01

Matty drew this picture at Mark Norval’s Gallery. Mark gave him the shells.

Broome02

Che drew this picture of a bird swooping down to catch a fish.

Broome03

On the way out of Derby we saw this Prison Boab Tree. It is about 1500 years old.

Broome04

Broome

Broome was really nice. We didn’t want to leave.

Che is on the old jetty. Can you see the plane in the background?

Broome05

Matt is standing next to a pearl diver.

Broome06

We saw Sammy the Dragon doing his dance at the opening night of Shinju Matsuri (Broome Pearl Festival).

Broome07

Che is at the town beach.

Broome08

Matt and Mum are at the town beach too.

Broome09

We saw the Shinju Matsuri Street Parade. There were people watching the parade with water balloons at the ready. They got into a water fight with theses fire fighters.

Broome10

We are at Cable Beach. We jumped the waves.

Broome11

One afternoon we went on a camel ride on Cable Beach. Mum got a free pair of pearl ear-rings. How come we didn’t?

Broome12

There was a great big jolt when the camel sat down at the end.

Broome13

At Malcolm Douglas’s Crocodile Park we all held the baby croc. We’re not sure if it was a freshie or a saltie, but we were glad its mouth was tied shut.

Broome14

Broome15

These are some crocs getting fed. They are snapping at each other. The pond was green as grass.

Broome16

The man patted this American Alligator. He said they make good pets if you feed them a lot. Salties do not make good pets, ever.

Broome18

This is Matt getting his arm bitten off by a crocodile.

Broome17

This is the sun setting at Cable Beach.

Broome19

We went to look at the dinosaur footprints when the tide was really low. We saw this coral.

Broome20

Matt’s foot is next to a dinosaur footprint.

Broome21

This is another dinosaur footprint.

Broome22

This is a pair of dinosaur footprints.

Broome23

We are looking for more dinosaur footprints. Matt thinks he has found one.

Broome24

These are barnacles, or as Captain Haddock would say, ‘billions of blue blistering barnacles’.

Broome25

Che found these weird black things called chitons.

Broome26

Dad walked out (and ran part of the way) a kilometre when the tide was low to see this wreck of a flying boat from WWII. The sun had set by the time he got there (he did start just before the sun set). He is at the town beach which is on Roebuck Bay.

Broome27

We looked at starfish instead.

Broome29

We watched the moon rise. It looked orange when it was rising and you could see its reflection on the sand flats of the bay. This is called the staircase to the moon.

Broome28

We have now driven for 3 hot days and are back in Mataranka. Let’s go swim in Bitter Springs now. Bye!

We’ll be home before too long. Look out for our next post…it might be our last one…

I love your drawings, Che and Matt. They are spectacular!

I can see why you loved Broome so much. The dinosaur footprints, the stairway to the moon, the beaches…it all looks amazing!!

I have stood inside the Boab prison tree. There was lots of graffiti carved on it when I was there. I suppose it’s all still there?

I love the photo of Matt with his arm in the croc’s mouth – that croc looks very realistic!

Hi Matt, are the dinisour footprints real? I want to hold a baby croc like you did. I miss you alot and hope I see you in term four. Oscar

I too think Matt and Che`s drawings of the wildlife are excellent.
Riding camels looks like a relaxing way to travel.
The dinosaur footprints look like they were made by giant emus.
Was the flying Boat wreck that your Dad walked out to a Japanese one shot down during World War 2?
