Days 31 – 37
We went back to Darwin because it was too hot everywhere else.
(Another free) Water park
We went on a big waterside. There were 6 lanes and stop and go lights. At the bottom there was a board that told you who came 1st, 2nd 3rd and so on. If you went before the green light you were disqualified (the board said 0).
We had to lie on a mat. Che is going down on his own.
This is Matt and Che going really fast down the slide.
Here is what the slides looks like. You can also see the other stuff there- there was a water play park and a small pool. It was only about 30 cm deep.
There was also a swimming pool and a water play park at the caravan park.
Howard Springs
We went to Howard Springs, just around the corner from the caravan park.
Matt is in the water, bobbing along on his belly.
This is an Australian white ibis. We have seen them everywhere. They are always at the caravan parks. This one was trying to get our picnic lunch.
Che went on a flying fox.
Matt went on the flying fox too.
Dad found a dead bat on a bench. He took some photos of it. Mum thinks it’s a bit icky.
Che lost his leg to a crocodile. Luckily he made himself a fake leg. (I think we might be joking. What do you think?)
WW II Oil Storage Tanks
Right under Darwin are some huge old storage tanks that they used during the war. We had a walk inside them. It was interesting.

Darwin Waterfront
We walked around Darwin and down to the waterfront. It didn’t look like a good place to go swimming.
Military Museum
We went to the Word War II Military Museum. Did you know that Darwin was bombed by Japan in World War II?
We are standing near an anti-aircraft gun.
Matt is by a small tank-like vehicle.
This is an anti-shipping gun. It can shoot about 30 kilometres.
I wish that I could have some heat so I could go swimming. You never wrote whether you came first, second, third, or got 0 on the slides.
Do people swim in the ocean at Darwin?

Matt came third or fourth.
Che came first twice and second three times.
People swim in the ocean in Darwin but we didn’t because of the jellyfish.

The long days of sitting in the car are a bit boring. The good thing about our trip is there is hardly any school work (though I am doing some). My favourite things were the water slides and the army guns and the horse riding.

We remember visiting the WWII Oil Tanks too – do you know they were never used – I think the war finished by the time they were completed.
I’m sure you’ve read that the aboriginals in Darwin described six different weather seasons. Apparently it is now Gurrung, the hot and dry season. Is that how it feels? Send some of it down here!
Steph & Mia had book week parade last Thursday. Steph was supposed to be Thing 2 -but the costume never arrived so she went as Anne with an ‘e’ of Green Gables. Everyone thought she was Pippi Longstocking because she had long red plaits. Mia dressed as Cleopatra with a gold crown, jewelled shawl and flowing green organza cape – she had a ball! But it rained all day – I’m sure they would preferred to have been sliding down waterslides at a million miles an hour!!

Do you like the weather we sent you? We hear it has been quite hot in Adelaide, though not as hot as here. It’s been 37 or above for days.
Thanks for sending us some rain in Darwin. We loved it. It only rained one night, but they were big cool drops.
