Days 20 – 23
Nourlangie Rock (Anbangbang)
We went to Nourlangie Rock. A ranger told us about how the grinding stones the Aborigines used had put these holes in the rock. They used the grinding stones to grind up seeds to make flour.
This is a rock painting of the ancestral spirits. The one on the right is the lightning man.
This is a man who broke the law and turned into a crocodile.
This is an older rock painting. The ones above were painted in the 1960s.
Cahills Crossing
Cahills Crossing was cool. We went there when the tide was changing, just before low tide. The fish were crossing the causeway, and the salties were catching them. This croc has caught a fish.
The crocs lie there with their mouth open and their front legs outstretched to feel for fish. This is the same croc with the same fish.
He needs to get the fish facing head down before he swallows it. If he swallows it the other way the fins and spines get caught in his mouth.
This is a saltie crossing the causeway. We saw cars going across the causeway too. One car almost went over the edge into the deeper part of the river.
Here is another croc eating another fish. We saw lots of crocs here. We definitely did not go in the water here.
This is a whistling kite taking off.

Ubirr
We went for a walk near Ubirr. It was called Bardedjilidji, which is the local Aboriginal word for walking track. These rocks amazed Che because the top one was balancing there precariously.
On the walk we had to go through this cave. It was really really hot on the walk.
At Ubirr we saw lots of rock paintings. These are paintings of things they ate. What you can see now are barramundi.
We climbed to a lookout. Here is a picture of Dad because Dad’s boss wants to see one of him.
Matt is at the top of the lookout.
Behind us is a remnant patch of vine rainforest.
Che is using the binoculars to spy on the ranger.
We watched the sunset from the top of Ubirr rock.
Jabiru
There were lots of mozzies at Jabiru. But the caravan park had power and a swimming pool. Matt is sleeping under his mozzie net.
Mamukala
We went to Mamukala bird hide. We saw this darter in the billabong.
Che found a piece of bark from a pandanus that was in the shape of a cup with no bottom.
It was hot so we all brought our water backpacks on our walk.

It is very cold in Adelaide, for me that is. We went for a run along the beach on Sunday and there were people swimming. That is something that I wouldn’t think of doing.

Did you swallow any mozzies on the way? We thought that the kite bird looked really amazing. What was the best thing that you did in Kakadu? What was the best thing you have done on your trip so far? At Cahill’s Crossing we saw about 10 crocodiles.
I wasn’t scared for the people driving their car because I didn’t think they were going to fall in, Matt thought they would.
I haven’t swallowed any mozzies, but I have been bitten. I do sleep under a mozzie net so I don’t get too many.
The best thing I did in Kakadu was see the crocs at Chaill’s Crossing.
The best thing I have done on my trip so far is go on the water slides in Darwin. We haven’t put up our Darwin post yet, you’ll see that later.

Kakadu 2 is just as good as Kakadu 1. I didn’t know that the crocodiles had to swallow the fish head first. Is that the way they eat a person? Have you been complaining about the heat? If you were here you wouldn’t complain because it is cold, wet, and windy.
